Not all bamboo is equally hard
“Bamboo flooring” covers a hardness range wider than most hardwoods put together. The heat treatment that gives carbonized bamboo its caramel colour also softens it; natural bamboo lands around oak; and strand-woven bamboo, a dense fibre-and-resin composite, is among the hardest floors made.

How hard is bamboo flooring compared to oak?
It depends on the type. Natural (un-carbonized) bamboo is about 1,380 lbf on the Janka scale, a touch harder than red oak's 1,290 lbf. Carbonized bamboo is softer at about 1,180 lbf. Strand-woven bamboo is in another league at roughly 3,000 lbf and up — well beyond any common domestic hardwood.
What is the Janka hardness test?
It measures the force needed to embed a 0.444-inch steel ball halfway into a wood sample. That force — reported in pounds-force in North America or newtons elsewhere — is the standard industry proxy for how well a floor resists dents, scratches, and everyday wear.
Why is strand-woven bamboo so much harder?
It's made differently. Instead of gluing flat strips together, the bamboo is shredded into fibres and compressed with resin under enormous heat and pressure. That dense fibre-and-resin composite is far harder than natural bamboo or solid wood — one of the hardest flooring materials you can buy.

Is a harder floor always better?
